⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! The Inspiration, book 1 of 3. Naïve Ava finds herself pining after the celebrated & infamous Max Caswell!

“I just want to consume him, and I hate myself… knowing that doesn’t make me any better than his art groupies.”

Books in The Work of Art trilogy should be read in order:
Book 1: The Inspiration
Book 2: The Unveiling
Book 3: The Masterpiece

The Inspiration (book 1) opens up to art store employee and aspiring writer Ava Jacobs working an art show in New York where she encounters renowned and notorious bad boy artist and heir Max Caswell. For a brief moment in time she holds his attention and their connection is fierce, until art groupies sidetrack him.

Back home in Los Angeles their paths cross again. A friendship of sorts ensues with Max seducing Ava into becoming his muse, while she tries to remain cool and gets help by an unexpected suitor.

A breathtaking journey in the art world, with a self-destructive, volatile and oh so aloof Max sending mixed signals to an increasingly flustered yet determined not to be smitten Ava.

“I want to kiss him with every fiber of my being, but evidently he’s determined that I’m destined to be his savior, not his lover.”

Nine words to describe Max Caswell: self-saboteur, secretive, possessive, elusive, unpredictable, jaded, broken, controlling and reckless.

Seven words to describe Ava Jacobs: naïve, smart, independent, stubborn, impressionable, reflective and ambiotious.

The Inspiration, told from Ava’s POV, is and a candid glimpse the ritzy and eclectic LA art scene. Though Ava is to become Max’s inspiration he remains the center stage of the story all the way to the shockingly perfect ending. Up next book 2, The Unveiling for the continuation of what looks to be an epic love saga.

Spectacular plot! Excellent story-telling! Swoon-worthy hero! Enjoyable setting! PS. There is a bowling alley in Mar Vista!

“God, he’s beautiful, I marvel, allowing myself one last swoon before I steel myself for what’s to come.”

I'm not sure about this one. The story was interesting and I feel like I've spent a little time living in someone else's glamorous life, but I was pretty frustrated by the heroine's fickleness and not attracted to either hottie she was flirting away with.

Actually, I'm not completely sure whether the tormented yet brilliant art genius or the older, successful, charismatic publisher was supposed to be the love interest. Unfortunately I fear it was the artist - not a popular choice for me as he was a bit flaky - setting her up on a pedestal and using her as a muse while still whoring around with groupies. Not a fan of that. The publisher guy meanwhile was playing the long game, taking her on posh dates then encouraging her to get to second base under the thick linen tablecloth. That was hot and would've been enough for me, had she not been lusting after the artist chap, but lamenting his willingness to be straight with her on the previous page. I couldn't keep up with her and I just kind of found it hard to work out who she wanted and who I wanted her with. It did affect the chemistry for me as I wasn't quite invested in seeing her with either of them.

There's lots of good stuff in this, the deets about the art world were vivid and the characters were lively and interesting. I cannot lie though, I would've appreciated a little smut. I feel a bit teased.

This is the first in a trilogy, it ends pretty abruptly with nothing resolved so I'll have to commit to reading two more books to get the rest of the story and I'm not sure I fancy that right now.

**Work of Art generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

Books set in the world of art constantly intrigue me. After seeing the cover and reading the blurb for Work of Art my curiosity bested me. Ruth Clampett delivers a deliciously daring tale. Beautiful and fluid prose perfectly balances the light and the dark of not only the art world, but of the artist’s mind through the sharp lens of an engaging, smart protagonist. The voice of this New Adult contemporary novel, Ava, delicately preserves the reader’s opinions between the grotesque and the extraordinary.

The writing style of this author fully engages. The story structurally designed by Clampett leaves much room for growth. While it’s not an “edge of your seat” style of writing, the intrigue to want to learn more about these people presents itself fully. More often than not, I found myself lost in Clampetts words, engaged in the pages. Each character the reader meets provides a different aspect to the story.

Work of Art is told from Ava’s point of view. It’s a circular point of view as Ava engages with a variety of characters and subsequently a variety of attitudes and personalities. She’s oddly star struck by the intensity of her feelings toward Maxfield Caswell – the artist. Conversely, she’s similarly puzzled regarding the force of feelings from Jonathan – the publisher. Through a whirlwind of excellent opportunities surrounding a project for Max, Ava subtly walks a tightrope tethering her to both men in very different ways because each represent something different.

Maxfield Caswell – the artist – entrances the reader. As an artist he’s conflicted. The dark inner workings of his mind we aren’t privy to but from Ava we see the difficulty straining him to maintain the level of his work coinciding with the level of his fame. He’s an enigma. A puzzle we must work to solve. The author blends into his character a pattern of conflicted artist and soulful man. The weaving of the two extremes in his personality, the difference between the beautiful light and the ominous dark in Max gives the reader a very intriguing character. The purity from Ava in his life cleanses his soul. However, it’s not enough to keep his demons at bay.

There were certain parts of the book that became mundane to me, details I found not important to the story or the development of these characters. Even though a few times while reading, I felt easily distracted more often than not I was consumed by Ava’s voice. Ruth Clampett wrote an intriguing book with Work of Art. Her writing is superb and her vivid telling of the art world mysterious and engaging combined with characters I want to know more about. I can’t wait for more the subsequent books to learn more about Ava, Max, Jonathan and the excellent cast of supporting characters. Work of Art does have a mild cliff hanger. Nothing over the top. You’ll definitely want book two but know the wait will be worth it.

I stayed up way too late reading this book! The relationship between Ava and Max is to die for. Their turbulent friendship so sweet it will melt your heart, and the sexual tension between them will curl your toes.

The author sets the story in the art world of colorful southern California with an authenticity born of her own experiences there, lending the story a depth and richness I rarely find in this genre. I even found myself googling locations and works of art in the story, because I simply had to see them!

But best of all are the fun, vivid characters. Ava is strong and focused, but over her head and confused where Max are concerned. Max is intense and brilliant, endearingly earnest, but painfully flawed. The secondary characters are juicy and great fun, and then there’s Jonathan, the charismatic older man who’s trying to get Ava into his bed (you will love to hate him!).

I loved this story. My only caveat is that when you reach the end you’ll be absolutely desperate for the next next book in the series.

Just received the ARC and it's all mine!! Am super excited, have been looking forward to this one!!

*Update - Full Review Now Posted*

Work of Art was definitely not what I thought it was going to be, IT WAS A RIDE my friends A RIDE!!!

And while I flipped flopped back and forth initially between, meh, yeah read this story line a 1000 times...oh I am liking this...I think I love it...hmm...not sure...to finally a big...I loved it!!

Confused?

description

Yep, I confused myself too...let me explain...

I am a well know fan of the author. I love her writing style and how she tells a story. So of course when she announced she was publishing Work of Art, I was immediately all grabby hands. And yes, I am aware it is a P2P, not one I read, but that really doesn't matter to me. I read and review all stories equally.

What confused me was the actual story line. Work of Art seemed to be the over used typical contemporary romance story.

Brooding misunderstood artist. Naive, kind, innocent, savior angel heroine. Older distinguished man, possible love triangle.

Blah.

One of my least favorite story lines. Always predictable, always the same path, always the same ending. I thought, no Ruth, why would you go there?? You wrote Animate Me, a fantastic original spin on contemporary romance. You wrote Mr.365, another great spin on contemporary romance. You have the ability to take the same old same old, and spin it in to very unique and engaging story lines, making it your own. Why this story line??

Sigh...this is gonna be a looonnnggg read...so I thought...

And yep, the first few chapters were as I predicted, brooding misunderstood artist. Naive, kind, innocent, savior angel heroine. Older distinguished man, possible love triangle.

But at about chapter 10, all that changed and the story took off, with me racing to keep up!! I was like WTH was that??? Where did that twist come from??

The characters clicked. The secondary characters came alive. The story line started sprouting epic feels, and the roller coaster began.

The story came alive with a realism that had me googling all sorts of things and places. Nothing better than a story that completely engages you on all levels blending fiction with reality. And I loved the quotes by known artists that started every chapter. Nice little touch by the author.

Now as for the characters.

Max is our brooding artist. Gifted, brilliant, troubled, dark. He has a past that was not so much tragic as it was dramatic. The loss he suffers early on definitely colors his world. The lack of a strong guide speaks so loudly that you get why he is the way he is.

Ava, not as naive as I thought. She turned to be a strong and intelligent woman brimming with vibrancy and gumption.

When these two meet, the "instatraction" was there, but they were both holding back looking for the big "more" and "what ifs". Their relationship went from not getting along to friendship and back to not getting along. Both extremely stubborn for their own reasons. At one point I wasn't even sure Max felt the same for Ava as she felt for him.

I really began rooting for these two to get their act together.

Then we have Jonathon. Our older distinguished gentleman. I initially liked him and thought I could see Ava going for him. But after a while, I was not digging him at all and was really hoping Ava didn't fall in to his suave trap.

There were some really good secondary characters that helped drive the plot as well as gave a much better picture of Max and Ava.

Even with the beginning of the story a bit ho hum same old same old, the story moved in a way that I really liked. I wound up totally engaged with the characters and the roller coaster of emotions had my heart pounding quite a few times. I definitely am invested and moved in to the yep, loving the story category.

The ending, a huge WHAT cliffie, something I am not a fan of usually, but the story carried its self so well, I am on board and looking forward to book 2 to find out what happened.

Congratulations Ruth Clampett, you once again took the same old same old, and made it your own!!

"If I know what love is, it is because of you." - Herman Hesse

"The Unveiling" was another compelling addition to Max and Ava's journey. I was captivated throughout, loving every single chapter. With this book, I was expecting more of the drama that was present in the first book in the series, however to my surprise it had a calmer and more relaxed pace to it. I thoroughly enjoyed what I was reading though but I had a feeling that it was the calm before the storm!

At the beginning of the story, Max was missing, leaving Ava concerned for his whereabouts. After Max's meltdown it was apparent that he needed help to deal with his emotions, especially where Ava was concerned. I was intrigued to see what was going to happen next between this couple.
"I can only hope that, when I'm doing better, you'll give me a chance to show you who I really am inside."

I felt kind of sorry for Ava, Although she loved Max with all of her heart she wasn't sure if he was the man for her. Could she truly trust him with her heart? I really liked Ava but as the story continued I wasn't sure I was happy with the choices she was making. I wanted to see her with Max and I felt that she was making entirely the wrong decisions. I know that they weren't an official couple but it felt to me like she was betraying him and making things worse. I hoped that she would come to her senses and follow her heart.
"I know it feels like things are hopeless, Ava, but that doesn't mean happiness isn't still worth fighting for...because it is."

Once Max was back on the scene, it became clear how broken he truly was. Max needed continued help and support but he also needed Ava. It broke my heart to see how troubled he was and what he had to deal with. He was in so much pain and he struggled so hard to contain his demons. In this part of the story, Max was determined to work through his problem. He knew that to be with Ava, he had to prove that he could handle his emotions. It made me so happy to see the change in Max. He truly loved Ava and believed that she was the other half to his heart. I was rooting for him every step of the way.
"I don't want anyone else. I want you, and I'm going to prove it every day until you finally believe me and want me too."

I loved seeing Max and Ava together and happy. The majority of the story was all about the couple working together, supporting each other through all of their issues. The love love that they felt for each other was too intense to ignore. Their relationship was worth the fight. It made my heart skip a beat to see how beautiful they were and how they both were so determined to make it work. They were perfect for each other and giving up did not appear an option. I loved the calmness in this part of the story. It was lovely to see how much progress that they were making.
"I want to crawl inside this moment and live there suspended, so this feeling never stops."

Despite the bond between Max and Ava growing it was inevitable that the pair would face challenges so I was not surprised to see Max struggling with his feelings. Max's possessiveness and jealousy began to rear it's ugly head and was set to cause a rift between the pair. Was their honeymoon period well and truly over? Would Ava be strong enough to help Max through his demons? It's clear that Max and Ava have a long way to go before they find their happy ever after. I am intrigued to see what will happen next and how the couple will deal with their ongoing problems. I can't wait to read the next book to find out although I am apprehensive about what the future holds for this passionate couple.
"Do I know what I'm doing? Falling in love with a crazy artist?"
"Yes, when the crazy artist is crazy in love with you."

"The Unveiling" was another brilliant part to what is becoming a fascinating series. The story is once again beautifully written. I love Ruth's writing style. She has a wonderful way of making me fall in love with the story and it's characters. If you are looking for a new series to read then I wholeheartedly recommend this one.
I wish I could look into his head and see what he sees. Maybe I'll never understand him, but because I love him, I'll never stop trying.

I rate this book ❤️❤️❤️❤️.5

"Life is the art of drawing without an eraser." ~ John W. Gardner.

"Work of Art" was a bit of a slow burner to begin with but boy, did it hot up! It was a story that was filled with passion and intrigue and I loved it!

Maxfield Caswell was the pop star of the art world. He was an artist with a bad boy reputation and when I first met him, I was intrigued. I couldn't work him out. The more I got to know about him, the more I realised that this boy was a tortured soul. Something was going on with him, something deep and very well hidden. I became more and more curious about Max with each new chapter and I was desperate to know more about him.
"Ava, you don't know how dark things are in my mind. What I am inside...what I can be like."

When Max met Ava, it was obvious that there was some kind of pull between them, however I wasn't sure of Max's true feelings and what was his intentions were. Did he just want to be good friends or did he want more? He completely confused me. It was like he had two different personalities. A side that was hot, passionate and loving and a dark side where he was moody and bad tempered. Max was definitely a challenge. He wasn't an easy guy to love but there was something about him that I couldn't resist. I knew that deep down, Max was crying out for help and it appeared that the only person that soothed him was Ava.
"So, fair Ava, how does one win the heart of a girl like you?"

I liked Ava, she was sweet and funny and had a very sexy imagination. When Ava met Max she found herself highly attracted to him, so much so that she began to have some seriously saucy fantasies about him! I wondered if any of her fantasies would ever come true. A relationship with Max was not going to be a straightforward one so there were a lot of times when I doubted that they would.
"Some people expect love to be handed to them like a gift, love in a box...all tied up with a big red bow. But it rarely happens. Sometimes it's rough and gritty, and you have to fight your way to it."
When Max and Ava were together, there was a spark that came from them. I could practically feel the sexual tension between them building with every new chapter. As the story continued I was treated to some deliciously hot scenes and there was even one that reminded me of the famous scene from the film "Ghost" (Only instead of a potters wheel it was some kind of art press!). It was scorching hot and it was my favourite scene in the entire book! LOL.
"Ava, I can't fight this anymore, I've got to have you."
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was was brilliantly written and I just loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. The story of Max and Ava kept me intrigued from the word go and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next between the couple. This was the first series I have read that was set around the world of art and I found that it was a refreshing change. It was also my first introduction to this author and I became an instant fan. I am excited to read the next book in the series. Although this one did not end in a cliffhanger, I was left eager for more.

"Work of Art" gets 4.5 tortured hearts from me!

4 Angel Stars

The Unveiling comes as book two in Ruth Clampett’s Work of Art series picking up right where book one left us slightly hanging. Just as in the first book of the series, The Unveiling tells the reader the story of Max Caswell and Ava Jacobs through Ava’s voice in a seamlessly fluid way. The plot thickens even as reader questions from book one are dutifully answered. Clampett once again writes very openly to the reader yet subtly leaving small details hanging as to intrigue us more for the third book.

Chaotic thoughts in the form of storytelling from Ava give the reader a bird’s eye view into her mind helping us understand the finer details of her of choices and the mess Max has made of her mind and her heart. As the book progresses so does Ava's posture about ther situations with both Max and Jonathan. She’s confused as a heroine, unsure if her love for a seemingly unhealthy, broken artist can be enough for the both of them to survive their feelings. And conversely she's conflicted about the debonair publisher out to woo her since through her, we learn more about the illustrious Jonathan – whom captivates for a reason. We get glimpses of her strength as a woman as Max comes back into her life. She grew exponentially in book two.

Speaking of growth, there’s a lot to be said for Max Caswell in The Unveiling. The man sees something good, strong, and healthy so he tries to uproot his ingrained ideologies and trust from faith rather than disregard from unhealthy mistrust. His interactions make more sense as he opens up his heart. The two of them are a heady combination together. Passion and fireworks when it’s just the two of them in their own little bubble. I fell a little harder for Max in this book. The beauty of their growth together is the recognition they want to be better for each other and dutifully work to make themselves better and more understanding.

The Unveiling has a bit of everything: the building of a unique, flirty friendship into a passionate love affair, betrayal from trusted characters, a stigma placed on both Max and Ava about who they are making it harder for them to grow professionally, and friends/family who continually support. While again, I sometimes got lost in the trivial details, I’m still excited about book three. I’m convinced of the connection between Max and Ava fully, my connection with either of them is a bit lacking for my taste but that hasn’t made the book any less entertaining for me but rather leaves me still as intrigued as I was after book one. I think there’s a lot of sass and spitfire we’re going to see from Ava as her feelings for Max fully bloom in book three. And likewise, I see Max coming around in a major way to support and cherish this woman uniquely his.

The series is perfect for New Adult romance lovers who like a strong heroine and broken hero based in the colorful world of art and entertainment. Clampett’s writing, her use of quotes to perfectly depict the chapter ahead all combine into great storytelling. Very much looking forward to book three.

I love books where the heroes are male sluts and especially if those sluts that are also artists, but Maxwell was a tool. I did not like him and I did not care for the heroine. Her inner dialogue annoyed me. Her whole attitude toward Maxwell was just immature. Also, I hate when authors describe every single item of clothing that the heroine wears. Sometimes I think "ugh, she wore what?" This may work for you. You may love it, but it did not work for me. These are just my thoughts and opinions about the book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️Work of Art by Ruth Clampett...WOW! Nothing like I expected it to be!⭐️⭐️⭐️

I NEED book 2...STAT!!! What is it about eccentric artists?!?! You definitely do not want to miss out on this read.

Work of Art sucked me in right away. Ruth Clampett blew me away with her writing style...So much attention to detail without making the story drag. Ms. Clampett painted a beautiful story and made me feel like I was a part of it. The art shows, the galleries, all of it... I felt I was right there.

The characters in Work of Art are fabulous. I loved Ava, I did. A strong young woman who knows what she wants... and what she shouldn't want. I could relate to her character on so many levels as I think many readers will. As I got further into Work of Art, I realized that Max was nothing like I thought he would be. There is so much depth to this character. I couldn't help but fall for him and his smooth and sexy talking, the man knows how and what to say to make the ladies swoon ;-) But much like Ava, I'm torn. There is no denying the electrifying chemistry or connection between these two characters but sometimes that isn't enough.... Is it? Especially when one of you is dealing with demons. Then there's Jonathan. Please, please, please tell me we get more Jonathan in the next book! I swear this man melted the panties right off of me! Confident, worldly and a smooth sexy talker...Hot damn this man is HOT! All of the supporting characters are equally brilliantly written. This story would not have been the same without them all.

Work of Art is full of steamy sexual tension and I gotta say that I wasn't expecting how clenchingly HOT this tension would be! Ms. Clampett definitely knows her hot and schmexy!! But, it's also filled with the perfect amount of angst. Not enough to drive me to drink, but enough that helped set the mood and make it believable. Work of Art isn't all sexy tension and angst. There is also just the right amount of humour to lighten the mood.

I warn you now that Work of Art has a cliffhanger. An, “OMG I need more NOW!!” kind of cliffhanger! I can't wait to see where Ms. Clampett takes this story!!!

If you are looking for a read to pull you into its pages with original story, fabulously developed characters, and a healthy does of sexy angst... Look no further! Work of Art by Ruth Clampett should be your next read.

*ARC PROVIDED AS -WORK OF ART THE COLLECTION- FOR AN HONEST REVIEW*

Love is -truly- in the air.
Wow. Its intense. The story progressed really good, sometimes a bit slow for my taste, but I loved.
Max is finally trying to change and somehow he is succeeding.
It was boring at times and I just wanted to skip towards the end but suddenly all hell breaks loose and I am on alert again.
Max needs to trust Ava, he wants to give in but he is hesitating and it hurts Ava, because she is trying to trust him.
I am glad Jonathan went to hell, I hated him.
Whats up with Dylan? He is obnoxious.
Riley and Jess >
Adam and Brian >
Their friendship was a rollercoaster and now this amazing intense relationship is changing 360 degrees every few days.
I can't wait to see Ava and Max's grand finale. I bet it will be explosive and full of hurdles along the way.
The final part ---- Here I come.

I love meeting and being introduced to new authors. Finding a new book is like hitting the jack pot!
When I met this author at the OC book signing... I was really excited when she told me about her book. A painter with passion and a bit of an edge. I was sold!!! Sounds like my kind of book!! I couldn't wait to read it!!
I'll just dive right into my review. There were things I liked about this book and things I didn't care for.
Max and Ava had a really up and down kind of friendship. There was a lot of back and forth going on in this book. And I mean all through out this book.
When Ava met Max for the first time she was defending him and he was in awe over her. He took Ava defending him as a sign that they were meant to meet each other.

Ok....

I was feeling this story up until the 50% mark. After that... I started to feel like I need more from the main characters in this book.
Hmmm... I was feeling Ava up until the house break in.
I mean...
She was kind of getting to me. I felt she was always throwing herself at Max. Setting herself up when it came to Max.
But once the break in happened. I hated how she called him. And he was with a girl.
Which made it even worst for me... Because... I don't want her to become a doormat. I wanted her to be strong. And slowly but surly... My opinion of her is starting to change.
Why didn't she call Adam?? He is like a father figure. That would have been my second call after I called the police. Not Max at all.

Ok...by 50% into the book. I don't get a feeling that Max was into Ava at all. I don't feel any sexual tension or a strong attraction coming from Max.
I didn't even feel like he was sending her mix signals. Because, he hasn't shown her that she means anything to him beside being his "angel". She helps him out he helps her out kind of relationship/friendship... Nothing more. It all just seems one sided at this point....

And that's Ava having to fight these overwhelming feelings she has towards Max. Max has no problem going out with girls & taking them out when he's not with Ava.
And Ava is acting like a jealous girlfriend... And it's killing me. Because she not even his girlfriend.
I also didn't like how everyone warns her and treats her like a kid when it comes to Max. She's an adult. Treat her like one. She's never given anyone doubt before that she can't handle things. So, why start now and treat her like a kid?

Max...
Wow... Where do I start. I feel like I connected more to his character most in this book. He basically laid all his cards on the table in the beginning of the book. Ava was the one trying to make more out of nothing. Did he give her mixed signals?...
Hmmm... Yes and no. But I felt Ava let it all get to her head. He paraded all kinds a women in front of her. She kept taking it. But... Ava never went out on dates! She only ever went on Business lunches or dinners with one guy. Which is not dating!

The ending...

Max has a big temper. When things don't go his way... He acts out. Ava finds out just how much Max really cares for her. Which was sooo late in the book!! I wish it would have been sooner.
This book doesn't leave off in the cliffhanger... but it most definitely leaves you wanting more.
I'm most intrigued to find out what happens between these two characters in the next book.
Most of all... I'm hoping they come together instead of playing this does he, doesn't he like me game (which I think they are to old to be playing).
I hate all this back and forth stuff between them.
What I'm hoping to see in book 2 is more of an effort from Max. Because right now for me... It all seem a bit one sided. Ava has this thing for Max.
-I need the relationship between Ava & Max to already take place.
-I need Ava to stand up for herself and not just give in too Max's temper tantrum's.
-I need Ava to go out and have a good time. Meet someone. Go out with this person. Because all she is doing now is thinking and pining away for Max.
(She seems into Jonathan... But she's holding back..which is extremely frustrating to me. Because Max is going out left and right.)
I know it may seem like I didn't like this book... But, I did.
This book had me going. I was invested in it. I couldn't put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next.

Will I read the next book in this series... Yes... I would...

Would I read other books by this author... Yes... I would.

REVIEW: 5 stars--WORK OF ART-The Inspiration is the first installment in Ruth Clampett’s remarkableWork of Art contemporary, adult, romance series focusing on tormented and troubled artist Maxfield Caswell and art graduate/writer Ava Jacobs. Told from Ava’s point of view, the reader is pulled into the haunting reality of one woman’s need to protect and defend a man who is quickly spiraling out of control.

The premise follows Ava and Max’s building relationship-a friends only relationship –that becomes complicated rather quickly when Ava becomes the muse to Max’s art. When Ava is hired to write the text for Max’s coffee table art book, Max’s obsession with Ava heightens their sexual attraction to one another, of which Ava refuses to admit. It will be Ava’s defiance in the face of the obvious that will send a despondent Max over the edge when she refuses to acknowledge that there is something more between them.

Max is a man possessed; an enigma; a tortured soul with a fragile ego and an even more fragile mind. Max’s lighter moments are juxtaposed with his darker personality such that his own life is a canvas of black on white where the dark begins to bleed outside of the lines. His art is his passion but his life is an endless parade of alcohol and sex. With his reputation in ruins, Ava will become both Max’s savior and his destruction when she is unable to keep his demons away.

There is a tentative love triangle woven throughout the story. Ava plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse where the heart will be the biggest loser of all. These moments of aggravation did little to help Ava’s cause. As Max tries to keep his distance, Ava will try to focus on who and what it is she truly wants. In the end, Ava will push Max too far and it will be her heart that will be the first to fall.

The secondary characters are colorful, fascinating and startlingly real. From co-workers and fellow artists to the industry players, we get a glimpse at the behind the scenes struggles of an artist whose emotional stability is deteriorating one brush stroke at a time.

The romance is limited as Ava and Max dance around one another most of the book. There are no sex scenes or graphic sexual imagery but the are moments of sensuality and passion.

WORK OF ART –The Inspiration is a passionate and intense story that will seduce your mind. The artistic imagery and references bring a reality to the text as the reader is guided through a gallery of who’s who in the world of art. Ruth Clampett paints a story with her imagination just as an artist paints a picture with color and inspiration.

“To all the artists…
Thank you for bravely
Showing us what you see
When you close your eyes
I see the world differently
Because of you”
Ruthy, you are an artist and a work of art too. I see the world differently because of you! As in all of Ruth’s stories, some form of art is always represented in addition to her written words. In the first few pages the author’s descriptive language captured me and has me running to find images to illustrate her beautifully constructed story at every turn. Ruth has lived and breathed art since birth, the daughter of an animator, and she works in the world of art as well. She shares her life experience with every word. I can see her in her character Ava Jacobs.
‘Work of Art-The Inspiration’, the first story in this trilogy, features an eccentric painter, Maxwell Caswell, who captures the heart of Ava Jacobs. They meet at an art show in New York. She is there to help her boss and friend, Adam, her first big break after spending several years in his print shop. Max storms in having a typical Max tantrum and whisks Ava away from the show needing to escape the pressure of sales that crush his artistic spirit and bring out his dark side. They have an instant attraction that sparks and swirls at the first kiss of their hands like Van Gogh’s Starry Night.
Max and Ava make their homes in Southern California. Ava is a graduate of UCLA where she studied art history with a focus on contemporary art, and a minor in literature. Reading is a passion for her but she also holds an interest in writing about art. Ava says, “I’ve loved the experience of getting to know the artists. And seeing how people create sparked that feeling in me to create something too. I’m not an artist, but I do have a gift with words, so now I spend a lot of my free time writing.” Max is moody and eccentric and painting is his outlet. He has a darkness to him making him the perfect bad boy but there is more behind his darkness. He seems to live the life of the famed, artistic playboy but it isn’t the real “him”. It is the mask he has painted for his public that allows him to avoid having real, close relationships. “The Inspiration” finds Ava is inspired by Max’s art and Max’s whole spirit is inspired by the angel he finds in Ava, his new muse.
Each Chapter begins with a quote about art that sets the scene. I have made a Pinterest board for this story with the chapter quotes and pictures and links for the story. Ruthy and I will release pictures little by little.  My real review can be found in the images and quotes her words have inspired. The Board is titled, “The Work of Art Trilogy-Book 1-The Inspiration by Ruth Clampett” and can be found on my Pinterest “Elli Iris”.
http://www.pinterest.com/elliiris/the...
The whole book is based around their working relationship as she is hand-picked by Max to help with a book about his art. Their working relationship becomes more complicated as they both try to avoid their growing feelings for each other. Ava doesn’t believe he can give up his lifestyle so she looks elsewhere and Max sees her as something divine that he isn’t worthy of but that he can’t seem to rid himself of in his mind, heart or canvas. Will their connection move beyond the book they are creating? Will others stand in their way? The tension is delicious! Read and decide for yourself! I can’t wait for book two and three Ruthy!

Work of Art: The Collection by Ruth Clampett was originally published in 2014-2015 as a trilogy (The Inspiration, The Unveiling and The Masterpiece). The trilogy has been bundled into one long book PLUS bonus scenes from different POVs and add ons! The best part is that you don’t have to chew your nails over the cliff hangers of books one and two, because the final book of the series is published and included in this new offering.

Ruth Clampett’s writing in Work of Art is incredibly detailed and descriptive. Right away my senses were on overload. The characters are well developed, and I felt like I personally knew all the characters. Ms. Clampett provides readers with great details about the art world—both from the artist’s perspective as well as from gallery owners and other “business-end” groups. I loved all the references to classic art pieces, and the quotes at the start of each chapter were fabulous. The behind-the-scenes view of the crazy, political art business was fascinating.

Ava is the narrator of Work of Art. She is my kind of girl; she loves art and literature. When life turned sour on her, she moved cross country and with the help of classmate, Brian, she made lemonade out of her lemons. She got a new family, an education, and she has a budding career at a LA art gallery. Ava’s youth and inexperience makes her a naive when it comes to men and their intentions. Will she be able to handle the edgy, dark side of her eventual fame?

Max Caswell is a tormented and troubled artist who has found his muse in Ava Jacobs. He is an extremist; he is, at times, dark and brooding and at other times, he is charming and seemingly light-hearted. He struggles with some mental-health challenges that are exacerbated by a rough past. These issues hinder his personal life as well as his career. Juxtapose to his inner demons is Max’s light-hearted, handsome, party-boy, celebrity persona to which women flock.

The secondary characters are incredible. They are all richly developed. I loved Jess the lesbian artist best friend to both Ava and Max. Dylan, Max’s agent, is a dichotomy. Sometimes he seems to have Max’s best interest at heart, and at other times he seems to sabotage Ava and Max at every turn. Speaking of sabotage, the string of men who are “helping” Ava with her career (and secretly hoping to help her into bed) is amazing. They’re characters you love to hate even though they’re sort of caricatures.

Ava’s and Max’s story is painted in broad brush strokes from Los Angeles to New Mexico to New York to Paris. They have a unique, flirty friendship which blossoms into a passionate love affair that is tested by betrayal from seemingly trustworthy acquaintances. If that isn’t enough, the stigma of dating a colleague threatens to ruin their careers and subsequently their relationship. Thankfully, Ava and Max are surrounded by some seriously supportive friends and family who help them find their way. Fans of the new adult genre will love the dark and seriously angsty rollercoaster relationship. Art enthusiasts will fawn over the generous details of this four-star read.

~~~~~
REVIEW: 4.5 stars--THE UNVEILING is the second installment in Ruth Clampett’s contemporary, adult Work of Art romance series focusing on tormented and troubled artist Maxfield Caswell and his muse Ava Jacobs. The continuing story focuses on Max’s spiral out of control and Ava’s need to save the man with whom she has fallen in love. The Unveiling should not be read as a stand alone due to the nature of the series format and the information imparted in each successive installment.
Told from first person point of view (Ava) THE UNVEILING is a passionate, edgy and revealing look at the dark side of fame and one man’s struggle with mental instability, mistrust and emotional breakdown. Maxfield Caswell is a man whose need for one woman overrides all sense of responsibility and trust; he is a man doomed to destroy the woman that he loves through betrayal, heartbreak and fear. Unable to accept Ava’s love at face value, Max continues to push Ava at every opportunity; his apprehension, issues of trust and anxiety, and overwhelming obsession for Ava find Max and Ava at crossroads towards the future.
Max is a man whose responses to everything are extreme: from jealousy, depression, hopelessness and obsession Max’s continued fall into the abyss finds the man with thoughts of betrayal and mistrust, resentment and patterns of behavior that scream ‘warning’ with every encounter. As Ava’s success continues to climb, Max’s demons will grow stronger until he may have pushed away the woman that he loves. He is vulnerable to suggestion; continues to push at personal boundaries; and is unable to accept the truth. Jealousy runs rampant in Max’s obsessive world.
Ruth Clampett’s intense and passionate WORK OF ART series focuses on a man whose psychological and emotional behavior are not only personally destructive but professionally as well. While many artists are brooding and angst ridden there is a fine line between professional behavior and psychological nightmare; in this, Maxfield Caswell is a man who has lost all control of his emotional well being.
The supporting and secondary characters drive a good portion of the storyline as they focus their attention on Ava and the destructive nature of her relationship with Max. The world building continues to focus on Ava’s rising success as a writer; Max’s need and obsession with Ava; and the behind the scenes negotiations in the business of art. The sex scenes are intimate, provocative and sensual. There is no denying that Max loves Ava but it is the obsessive nature of that love that leads to questions of sanity and emotional stability.
** I received an e-Book ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review**
I need to start this review by saying that Max is officially my new book boyfriend. This sexy, tortured man has jumped straight off the pages of Ruth’s books, won my heart, and I am fully prepared to ride off into the sunset with him.
Now that I got that off my chest, let’s get to the good stuff, shall we? ;)
Clampett’s second installment in the Work of Art trilogy is nothing short of brilliant. The story picks up right where the first book left off, with Ava searching for Max while still trying to figure out what she feels for and where she stands with Jonathan. There’s a constant internal struggle brewing for the first portion of the book, because on one hand it seems logical to be with Jonathan; he’s older, successfully established, and honestly, much more predictable than Max. On the other hand, there’s this intense energy that seems to pull Ava and Max to one another. Their attraction is electric, and even though Max hasn’t treated Ava as well as she deserves to be treated, he clearly feels something for her that runs much deeper than a face-value friendship.
My favorite thing about Work of Art – The Unveiling is the amount of time we get to spend with Max and Ava. Sure we saw plenty of them in the first book, but in this book it’s different. They’re in a different place, the circumstances are different, and when these two are together, everything around them ignites in this passionate yet sensual flame. My favorite scenes from this book are in Santa Fe (you’ll have to pick up a copy and read to know what I mean). Clampett’s writing is descriptive and poetic, and for much of the book I felt like I was walking alongside the characters, observing their interactions, taking in their environments, and feeling their emotions.
I read this book in two days. I could not put it down once I picked it up. I love when an author has the ability to catch me hook, line, and sinker with his or her story, and Clampett successfully does that. She’s done such an amazing job of developing both Max and Ava’s characters that I found myself wishing I could just keep reading about them forever and ever and ever. The changes each character makes are well thought out, realistic, and perfectly interwoven into the plot of the story.
I won’t say how this book ends, but I will say that Clampett will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride of the best sort, and leave you chomping at the bit for more. I can’t wait to get my hands on the third installment of this trilogy. It’s going to be incredibly hard to make it for another two months, but I know that the wait will be well worth it. I can only imagine what Clampett has in store for these two, and all the spectacular words and situations we readers will get to encounter.
I would recommend this book to anyone I know who loves the art world, romance, sensuality, and just the right amount of angst. Or for anyone looking for an amazing book in general. The Work of Art trilogy is where it’s at.
I really do not know how to express how much I loved this book! After turning the last page, I physically was breathless as I read the last few words.
The story tells the tale of Ava and Max. Ava is an Art Assistant who meets and is instantly attracted to the bad boy of the Art world Max Caswell. He is beautiful, passionate and seemingly a womanizer. But surprisingly, after helping Max out of a delicate situation which could have harmed his career. He insisted that she write the text for a book based on his life. During this process they grow closer to one another and she sees the opposite of the playboy, someone sweet and fun. But try as she might, she cannot deny the feeling that she has for him. He also seems affected by her, but pulls away right at the moment where she feels them become closer.
This continues until finally they no longer can deny their attraction and express their feelings. But the time and place makes Ava feel like another one of his conquest and she stops become things become to far. The couple fights and the separation causes an explosive breakdown in Max, Ava is not sure their bond will survive.
Work of Art is a very well written read full of passion and romance. I along with Ava felt as if I were on an emotional roller coaster ride flipping between the sweetness and the darkness of Max Caswell. He is everything I love in a character dark, passionate, edgy and intense. I hated when the story ended and I searched frantically for the second one in the series!
Due to suggestive imagery, language and subject, I suggest for mature audiences. Love it!
Merged review:
Simply breathtaking! I could not wait for the second book in this installation, and I was not disappointed! Ms. Clampett has once again drawn me in and takes me on a roller coaster ride emotionally!! I cannot help but loving Max with all his torment and passions! The book picks up where the first one ends with Max having disappeared and a few of his paintings defaced. In Book Two, the search continues with all his loved ones, and Ava who feels guilt for his disappearance, in the forefront. On the fringes, is Johnathon the almost too good to be true publisher that is wooing Ava. We find out as readers there is a reason for his excessive charm. (Wow! Don't want to spoil it!).
Max does come back and the two (Ava and Max) attempts to re-build their budding relationship from scratch by taking it slow. But Max is a "Take All" personality so struggles with insecurities and jealousies related to Ava. She attempts to care for his fragile feelings, while also dealing with her own self doubts, and fear. But in the mix of this is a passion which is so profound it threatens to engulf both of them.
There will be tears, and mouth dropping surprise within this book, there is a cliff hanger at the end, and so now the torture begins waiting for the third in the series!
I fully recommend this incredible series!
I wish I could look into his head and see what he sees.
Maybe I'll never understand him, but because I love him, I'll never stop trying.
Work of Art Book #2, The Unveiling just completely wrenched my heart!
The growth that both Max and Ava experienced had me just hanging on their every word. That doesn't mean they didn't make me just as crazy as they did in book 1, but this time around, the journey was a tad bit gentler, drama not as high. Which I personally appreciated!
We left off with Max missing, his studio destroyed, and Ava heartbroken at the turn of events.
We now find Ava in her search for Max more mature and trying to take responsibility for her feelings. We also find her more involved with Jonathan in trying to give that relationship a go, of course, all the while trying to find out what happened to Max.
When Ava finally discovers where Max is, she goes to him. They are both very fragile with each other at this point and agree to work on being friends, developing that friendship. Their baby steps in growing as individuals and friends was completely huggable and you just cheer them on.
And while this is all going on, Ava is still seeing Jonathon. I din't trust him in book 1 and definitely still do not trust him in book 2, but Ava wanted to pursue the relationship even though she really wanted to be with Max. We also find Max understanding and more accepting, not pleased at all, but really trying to be a friend to Ava and work on his own inner demons.
Let me just say this with out giving anything away - there is a very climatic scene with Ava, Jonathon, and Max that causes the story to take a complete turn!!
It is after this turn that we see a new Max. More mature, responsible, and genuinely in love wanting the best for Ava. Ava at this point, not so good, but you'll see why, even though you just want to shake her!!!
I really enjoyed book 2 so much more than book 1. The growth of the characters, the development of the story line, the understanding and revealing of Max's past just had me hooked and the story flowed.
The author's characterizations are exceptional and vivid. You know Max and Ava, you live in their worlds, you cheer, cry, get angry, laugh, and fight right along with them.
I am looking forward to book 3 and conclusion to the trilogy, though fair warning, book 2 ends on a cliffie...again. I am not a fan of that at all, but the story is captivating enough, that once again, I am all in.
4.5 out of 5
I received a copy of this story for an honest review for The Reading Room Blog.
Work of Art: The Unveiling picks up right where Work of Art: The Inspiration leaves off, with tortured artist Maxfield Caswell missing and his savior Ava left piecing together the mystery of where he vanished to. As Max fights his demons Ava must decide if she should focus on supporting Max or protecting her blossoming art career. Will love their love for each other be their salvation or will their love of art be their downfall?
What I Loved: The Unveiling moves at such a quick clip it's easy to get absorbed in the mystery, emotion and action of the story. Max and Ava have a chemistry that crackles and their romantic scenes are off the charts. One of the best parts of The Unveiling is the love you can feel radiating from the book for all forms of art - be it a paintings, a song, a story. Author Ruth Clampett clearly has passion for all forms of art and it translates vividly to her characters and to her readers.
What I Didn't Love: Like The Inspiration, The Unveiling ends with another cliffhanger. The cliffhanger itself isn't my issue, it's the situation the story ends with almost felt like Max's character took two giant steps backward. I'm hoping for a little more growth in the final installment of the trilogy - Work of Art: The Masterpiece.
Favorite Quotes:
"I fall into him, our 'big love' making me forget for a moment that we're two separate people."
"Is it possible to keep falling deeper into love - to want someone so much that it edges your every breath and echoes in every heartbeat?"
"Max, being in love with you is like being on a theme park ride. Thrilling and harrowing... and I had to wait in line to damn long to get on."
Work of Art: The Unveiling is not a stand alone, you will need read Work of Art: The Inspiration before jumping in. Author Ruth Clampett sets a vivid stage for her characters and once you jump into the series I think you're going to fall for both books like I did. You won't want to miss this trilogy and I highly recommend it.
Happy reading.
Ruth Clampett has a way with bringing characters to life. As she delves further into the lives and careers of Max and Ava she shows us just how vulnerable they both are. Max continues to battle the demons of his past while Ava faces a huge betrayal from a place she never expected.
The level of passion between Max and Ava accelerates to incendiary.
~I slide my hand between his legs and slowly tease upward. "You know, it's not fair that I have to deal with getting scorched from all that heat. It's damn distracting. The want is overwhelming...we're lucky that I haven't spontaneously combusted by now."
The way that Ruth describes the scenes at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe were very provocative.
~My eyes wander over the waves of soft color blending into each other. "Really? How does it remind you of me?"
~"You really want to know? He pauses, and I wonder if it's sexual, because O'Keeffe's work is certainly noted for it. I can feel his breath on my neck, and his fingers press firmly into the flesh at the swell of my hips.
~"Yes." I lean back against him.
~"Okay, but this isn't really museum talk." He kisses me right behind the ear before lowering his voice. "This paining is how I see you between your legs. I could run my finders over the painting's colors and feel you opening up for me.
They work hard to support one another, but communication continues to be an issue. Ava sees how hard Max is trying to be the man she needs him to be.
~I understand the huge significance of his gesture and I close my eyes to still the memory in my mind. He wipes the residual paint off my finger with his rag, lifts my hand to his face and gently kisses the center of my palm.
Upon reading the last page of The Unveiling, I immediately contacted Ruth to find out when book 3 would be available. I'm not a patient person, but Max and Ava are worth waiting for. This is a must read series!
An e-copy was provided in exchange for a review.
Warning: Material is suitable for adult audiences.
The Unveiling, book two of Ruth Clampett’s Work of Art series picks up immediately from where book one leaves off, and we find Ava unsure and uncertain about the status of her relationships.
In the second book of her series, Ruth Clampett gives us a glimpse into the broken psyche of Max and the unraveling of Ava’s relationships. The evolution of the series in book two gives me a bit of hope for both Ava and Max’s future.
In book two, Ruth pulls back the curtain and we catch a glimpse of what makes Max so driven, so callous and so unfeeling towards women. Will Max’s struggle to tame his demons help him with Ava? We also learn a few things about Ava – what makes her feel so vulnerable, why she is so protective of her emotions and why it is difficult for her to let anyone in.
The Unveiling provides some answers, poses a few questions and makes you wonder – what comes next? Don’t wait long – pick up the book soon as you can. As for me, I can’t wait for book three – I need some answers!
Once I started the first page, I couldn't put this one down, and when I finished the book, I immediately started ticking off the days until the release of Part III. I can't get enough of these characters! In this book, Ava and Max's passionate love makes me think of the soaring romance of historical novels set in more colorful times, yet their modern day passion rings true as Clampett takes us through the couple's continuing struggles and triumphs. While there's no doubting the depth of their love, the problems Ava and Max must face are relate-able. I can easily imagine being in Ava's place (oh, that it were so), dealing with a beautiful but wounded Max, who is trying with all that he is to be a better man for her, fighting the obstacles thrown in their path. This is not a high school or college romance, but a sophisticated and juicy tale for grown women who value their autonomy and still long for an epic love. I give it my highest recommendation.
*ARC PROVIDED AS WORK OF ART - THE COLLECTION , FOR AN HONEST REVIEW*
Wow, that was heavy. Max has a loud messy mind.It was hard sometimes to accept him. He was frustrating, selfish and just too much.
Ava is truly an angel for keeping up with him.
Ava calmed him down, but didn't cure him.He needed the help all along.
I wish he gave them a chance and stopped protecting her. He was too focused on his past and clinging to the party thing and the string of girls. He needed to let it go and just ease himself into something new with Ava.
Ava liked too much even close to loving him. I think she was fascinated by Jonathon and attracted sexually to him, no more deeper feelings.
Not liking Jonathon at all!
Jess is an amazing friend, but sometimes too tough.
I love Dylan and Riley , they are do sweet. I just hope Dylan would stop blaming Ava for everything.
Excited to start on the second story and see where our mysterious Max is hiding!!
I LOVED this book!! The art world has always been very intriguing to me. While some may think it's "boring," Work of Art is ANYTHING but.
Ruth Clampett has a way of keeping the reader interested; Painting a picture, if you will, by her fascinating characters and what goes on in their environment.
Ava has been offered an amazing opportunity to write a table book of Maxfield Caswell, one of the most sought after up-and-comers in the art world. She was specifically requested by the artist, after having a brief run-in, and there is something there, that neither of them know, at first.
Will Ava tame the bad boy of the art world Max? Or will he just add Ava to his list of conquests? Will they only be just BFFs?
Let me tell you, you'll definitely enjoy the ride finding out!
I can't wait to read Book 2 and 3 of Work of Art!
